A LITTLE HELP WITH THE WORDS
What memories should you put in a birthday song?
You do not need a life story or a perfect speech. Three details the recipient will recognize are a useful place to begin.
1. Pick a moment you can picture.
Think of something you have actually done together. Where were you? What happened? Why do you still remember it? “You are always fun” is a feeling. “We missed the turn on our road trip and laughed all the way to the beach” gives the words a scene.
Keep it short. One or two sentences give you enough material to shape a verse without turning the song into a timeline.
2. Find a little thing that makes them them.
A habit, a phrase, a nickname or a familiar tradition can carry more meaning than a grand compliment. For Mom, it might be pancakes on Sunday. For your partner, the coffee waiting before work. For a friend, the same joke that somehow never gets old.
Choose a detail they would enjoy hearing. A funny story works best when you are laughing together, rather than putting them on the spot.
3. Add a wish for the year ahead.
The last detail helps the song look forward. You might wish them a new adventure, time to do what they love, or more ordinary days together. Include a birthday age only if you want it in the lyrics.
Here is a simple fictional intake example.
For Mom’s birthday: we dance in the kitchen while making Sunday pancakes. She makes everyone feel at home. My wish is for more slow mornings and little adventures together.
This is an invented example to explain the process, not a customer order or testimonial.
You can change the perspective, mood and wording before ordering. The details are ingredients for a lyric draft; they are not a promise that every phrase will appear exactly as typed.
Check the details before you approve.
- Spell the recipient’s name and add a pronunciation note.
- Check ages, dates and places.
- Read the draft aloud and change wording that does not sound like you.
- Leave out private details you do not have permission to share.
- Choose heartfelt, funny or a little of both, then a musical direction.
From memories to a gift.
